When The Walkmen broke through with sophomore album Bows + Arrows, their invigorating blend of post-punk and garage rock had the critics and public fawning. Over time their sound has mellowed and, on fifth album Lisbon, Hamilton Leithauser’s delicious weather-beaten yowl is applied in less frenetic but equally stirring sonic surroundings. Aside from the straight-up surf rock of ‘Angela Surf City’ and ‘Woe Is Me’, we find surprising swing beats, country-rock and, on ‘Stranded’, muted brass that wouldn't seem incongruous on a sun-dappled bandstand. The Rat it’s not, but with laconic, summery vibes like these arriving in autumn, who’s complaining.
