7digital What we said: Arriving swiftly after 2012’s incredible Ekstasis, Loud City Song is Julia Holter’s third long-player, and first studio album proper for Domino. Sonically, it’s probably even more ambitious than its predecessors, finding the Californian experimenting with a huge variety of instruments to craft intricate alt-pop that’s at times intimate and at others hugely cinematic. Thematically it’s fascinating too. For, just as Tragedy was informed by Euripides’ ‘Hippolytus’, and Ekstasis by the works of Virginia Woolf and Frank O’Hara, Loud City Song finds Holter looking to Collette’s novella ‘Gigi’ for inspiration. And by transposing the heroine to modern day LA, Holter examines the media’s fascination with celebrity, and the strangeness and beauty that exist in California’s most celebrated and derided city.
