7digital What we said: Sufjan Stevens once claimed he would write an album for every state in America, and although he only got as far as Michigan and Illinois, we can forgive him seeing as he’s now one quarter of a much bigger project, which has documented the universe itself. Combining with the talents of The National’s Bryce Dessner, as well as contemporary composers Nico Muhly and James McAlister, Planetarium is the quartet’s experimental update to Holst’s The Planets and is a fittingly sprawling and ambitious epic. Bouts of precise electronica give way to warming waves of violins, as songs rotate and transform constantly. This breathless approach leaves you with little choice but to be swept up in the impressive vastness of the music, which you suspect was precisely the intention.
